James K. “Sonny” Burks, age 87 of Winchester, passed away on Thursday, December 3, 2020 at St Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Manchester. He was born in Franklin County on November 14, 1933 to the late Riley and Zelma (Branch) Burks. Before his retirement, Sonny was employed for TVA, and he enjoyed spending time on his farm and tending to his cattle. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Lou Shockley Burks; and daughter, Samantha Burks Champion. Sonny is survived by his son, James Ronnie Burks of Winchester; grandsons, James Travis Burks, and Jared Daniel Burks; sister, Dimple Clark; brother, David Burks; beloved nieces and nephews, Mark and Janice Syler, and Joan and Jackie Lassiter; and numerous other friends and family. Visitation will be from 5-8 pm Sunday, December 6, 2020 at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 pm on Monday, December 7, 2020 in the Moore-Cortner Chapel with Rev.
