Mr. James “Jimmy” Edwin Greer, age 85, of Vernon, AL, passed away Monday, October 28, 2024, at Generations of Vernon.
Jimmy was born January 11, 1939, in Vernon, AL. He was a graduate of Lamar County High School, then he graduated from Forestry at Auburn University where he played basketball his freshman year. He married his high school sweetheart, the late Faye Pennington Greer, and they celebrated 56 years of marriage. Jimmy loved his family, friends, Auburn, golf, forestry, and watching Andy Griffith and old westerns. He worked for the Alabama State Forestry, and was the forestry business owner for Lamco Wood Products for over 50 years. Jimmy was involved in multiple board positions for forestry. He was a lifetime member of Nebo Church and was a representative of the Methodist Council. His other achievements included being a successful wood producer for many years for the pulpwood industry, and being a consulting forester for many individual landowners.
Jimmy was a one of a kind father, husband, and grandfather. As a dad in the 70s, he spent countless hours outside with his sons, Mike and Mark, tossing a ball, exploring the outdoors, and as they grew, sharing his love of golf. That same love and dedication continued with his grandchildren, with whom he delighted in showing a gentler side. Jimmy and his beloved wife, Faye, traveled far and wide to attend their grandchildren’s games, and they created cherished memories on family vacations to the beach.
The farm was a special place where Jimmy and Faye welcomed their grandchildren with open arms, and they joy they felt in his presence was unmistakable. Jimmy’s devotion to his family and his unwavering strength will never be forgotten. He leaves a legacy of love, laughter, and treasured memories that his family will carry with them always.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, October 31, at 2:00 PM at the Nebo Methodist Cemetery, with Terry McAdams officiating.
Jimmy is survived by his two sons, Mike (Mary Kay) Greer and Mark Greer; four grandchildren, Jake and Josh Greer, Savannah Smith, and Brandi Davis; and five great-grandchildren.
