James “Jim” Marvin Bloom, of Decatur, AL, passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at the age of 78. Born in Sedro-Woolley, WA, he was a beloved son of John and Sue Bloom.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Kathy, and their two children: Amy (Paul) of Gilbert, AZ, and Michael (Ana Lucia) of Sugar City, CO. He is also survived by his brother, Jack (Berti) Bloom of Malaga, WA. Jim was preceded in death by his parents.
Jim proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, completing three WESTPAC tours between 1967 and 1973. He continued his service in the Navy Reserve until his retirement in 2004, achieving the rank of Master Chief.
A dedicated lifelong learner, Jim earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington in 1979. He went on to enjoy a distinguished career in aerospace engineering, starting at Boeing, where he contributed to the AWACS program. He later worked on the electrical panels for the International Space Station and culminated his career as a Senior Systems Engineer with United Launch Alliance, focusing on the Delta and Atlas rocket programs.
Jim’s life was defined by service, community, and mentorship. A proud Eagle Scout, he remained deeply involved in Scouting, serving as a Scoutmaster, Wood Badge leader, and receiving the prestigious Silver Beaver Award for his contributions. His passion for Scouting’s values inspired his commitment to serving others, which he continued until the day he passed, preparing for a service project.
Known affectionately as “Doc” (Dutch Oven Cook) among his Airstream friends, Jim shared his love of Dutch oven cooking with enthusiasm, delighting others with his culinary creations during their travels. He and Kathy, along with their beloved Airstream trailer “Daisy,” formed lasting friendships as they journeyed across the country.
Jim’s warmth, generosity, and dedication to family, friends, and community will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held in Decatur, AL, with interment of his ashes planned for early 2025.
