James “Jim” L. Cherry departed this life on Thursday, March 5, 2020, at the age of 94 years, 6 months, and 23 days. He was born in Union City, Tennessee on August 11, 1925, the son of the late Walter and Mary Grooms Cherry. On April 30, 1987, he was united in marriage to Gayle Browder, who survives.
James was a member of Crump First Pentecostal Church in Crump, Tennessee where he served as deacon and head usher. He had worked as a foreman at Brown Shoe Company in Union City, Tennessee for 16 years and retired from Wurlitzer Company in Corinth, Mississippi where he was employed 25 years and held the position of production engineer. James enjoyed restoring antique tractors and computers. He loved traveling to the Smoky Mountains and attending antique tractor shows.
James is survived by his wife, Gayle Cherry of Counce, Tennessee; son, Stephen Cherry and his wife Julia of Jennings, Louisiana; grandchildren, James M. Cherry and Stephanie Lina Welshenbaugh; four great grandchildren; special niece, Abbigail Swisher of Franklin, Tennessee; and Kyle and Kaden Holt, who he thought of as his own.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by a brother, Andrew Cherry.
