James Douglas Turney James Douglas Turney, 81, of Hartselle, Alabama, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2024. Doug was born on December 4, 1942, in Decatur, Alabama, to William E. Turney and Orville Day Turney.

He graduated from Morgan County High School in Hartselle in 1961, where he excelled as a standout athlete in baseball, football, and basketball. During his senior year, Doug served as President of Morcohi’s “M-Club,” a testament to his leadership and dedication.

After high school, Doug pursued higher education at Florence State University, where he graduated in 1965 with a degree in Accounting. His professional career spanned several notable companies, including Brown Engineering in Huntsville. Monsanto in Decatur, and Speedring Industries in Cullman. He culminated his career as the comptroller of Decatur Coca-Cola Bottling Company, where his experience in finance and accounting was highly valued.

In 1965, Doug married Jane Wesson, and the couple was looking forward to celebrating 59 years of marriage on September 3, 2024. Their union was a testament to love, partnership, and commitment.

He was father to two children, Preston Turney and Carol Ann Turney, who remain grateful for his love and guidance. He also had two grandsons he adored, Keith Turney and his namesake, Doug Turney, who both loved him dearly.

He had a deep love for competitive sports, which he enjoyed analyzing and following closely. His passion for music spanned all genres, but traditional country music held a special place in his heart. He was especially proud of his years serving as board member of the Morgan County Sports Hall Of Fame and was a lifelong member of Hartselle First Methodist Church.

Above all, Doug enjoyed spending time with his family, sharing stories, and creating lasting memories. Doug was a friendly, humorous, and companionable man who loved to laugh and brought joy to everyone around him. His sense of humor was well-known and enjoyed by his family and friends alike.

He is survived by his wife. Jane; his children, Preston Turney (Penny) and Carol Ann Turney; his grandsons, Keith Turney and Doug Turney; his brother-in-law, Bob Wesson (Kathy); precious nieces and nephews; a host of beloved cousins; and many friends who will miss him greatly.

He was predeceased by his parents, William E. Turney and Orville Day Turney, and his Sister-In-Law, Bobbie Smith Wesson.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, August 25, at Hartselle First Methodist Church. Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm, with the service to follow at 2:00 pm,

Doug will forever be remembered for his kindness, his love for sports and music, and the laughter he brought into the lives of those fortunate enough to know him.

Memorials may be made to First Methodist Church “Good Samaritan Fund” or to a charity of your choice.
