James Arnold Horton, 88, departed this life Thursday October 24, 2024, at his home in Falkner, surrounded by loved ones.

Funeral Services honoring Mr. Horton’s life will be at 1 PM Saturday, October 26, 2024, at Mt. Zion Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Rev. Richie Lockhart and Rev. Dr. Jody Hill officiating. Visitation will be from 10 AM until time of service on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at Mt. Zion Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Horton was born at home in the Providence Community of Tippah County on July 8, 1936. The son of the late David Guyton and Dot Skinner Horton, he received his education from Chalybeate School. July 12, 1957, he married his beloved wife, Alice Hill Horton, who survives, and the two planted their roots in the Falkner Community, building a life and raising a family. A man of strong work ethic, in earlier years Mr. Horton was a carpenter by trade, employed with Ripley Shoe Products and Folk Construction in Memphis, before working with Hill Brothers until his retirement.

A Christan and Elder of Mt. Zion Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Mr. Horton was a spiritual man and community leader, whose mission in life was letting the Lord shine through him always. A lover of the great outdoors, his favorite pastimes included working in the garden, tending to his chickens, “piddling” around the house, and collecting and trading pocketknives, which he never left the house without one in each pocket. Mr. Horton believed in God and family first, loved surrounding himself by those he loved, and his greatest fulfilment was being the best, “Pop” to his grand and great grandchildren. Our lives are forever enriched, as we were blessed to have loved and been loved by such a wonderful man for the last eighty-eight years.

In addition to his wife, Alice Hill Horton, memories will continue to be shared by two daughters, Jane Childs (Danny), and Beth Lockhart (Richie), three sons, David Horton (Rhonda), Doug Horton (Vickie), and Jimmy Horton (Dana), one sister, Natalie Riley, one brother, Bobby Guyton Horton, ten grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren.

He is also preceded in death by one daughter, Marilyn Jo Horton, and three sisters, Dorthy Edwards, Nellie Horton, and Jean Harrell.

The family would like to express a special thanks to Mr. Hortons caretakers, Gwen Evans, Shanekia Tucker, Jessica Hayes, and Legacy Hospice of New Albany for their love, care, and dedication shown to them during this time.

Family request in lieu of flowers donations be directed to Mt. Zion Cumberland Presbyterian Church at 480 county road 401, Falkner MS, 38629.
