James Alton Silver – Obituary

James Alton Silver, 73, passed away Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at his residence. He was born Nov. 23, 1942 in Rossville, GA, the son of Harold and Clarice Silver. He grew up in Okolona and lived most of his adult life in Shannon. James spent 10 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, proudly serving his country with 3 tours in Vietnam. Highly decorated, James earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal 3 times, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Meritorious Mast, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Rifle Sharpshooter Badge and the Navy Achievement Medal with Combat V. After leaving the military, he worked as a self-employed auto mechanic. He enjoyed collecting guns and knives and fishing, but his heart belonged to his family. James loved spending time with his grandkids and his dog, Buddy.

A memorial service with military honors will be held 1 p.m. Saturday outside at Lee Memorial Funeral Home.

James leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Billie Ellis Silver of Shannon; 2 children, Lisa Lansdell (Clay) of Saltillo and Matthew Silver (Krena) of Shannon; a brother, Tony Silver of Vardaman; his mother, Clarice Hollis Silver of Vardaman; and 3 grandchildren, Claire Ellis Silver, Zack Summerford, and Curt Silver.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Silver
