Jack T. Romine, 91, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014. The memorial service will be 2 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2014, at Elkins Funeral Home, Florence with Dr. Carl Gebhardt officiating. The graveside service with military honors will follow at 3 p.m. at Florence City Cemetery.
Jack was born May 10, 1922, and was a lifelong resident of Florence, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his wife Doris L. Romine and his daughter Kimberly T. Romine.
Jack is survived by his brother, Mack H. Romine; nephews, Mack H. (Linda) Romine Jr., James K. (Pam) Romine and niece Susan Goode, along with many great nieces and nephews.
This country lost a great American this week. Major Jack “Blackjack” Romine was a USAAF pilot during WWII and Korea. He piloted P-47 “Thunderbolts”, P-51 “Mustangs”, and the P-80 “Shooting Star.” Some of his notable recognitions include being the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Air Medal with 7 oak leaf clusters along with many other citations and awards. He was the definition of a combat aviator and one of the last of a dying breed of true American hero’s. Jack continued his love of aviation after serving his country. He was a pilot and flight instructor at Muscle Shoals Aviation while working and retiring as a US Postal Mail carrier in Lauderdale County.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to support American Veterans and service men and women. Organizations such as Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Wounded Warriors held a special place for Jack. The family would like to extend a special thanks to caregiver Stephanie Moore (Sugar) who took such good care of him, also thank you to the fith floor nurses at ECM. He will be missed but never forgotten.
