J. P. Henson – Obituary

JPMr. J. P. Henson, age 85 of Whiteville, departed this life Thursday morning, October 31, 2013 at the Harris Grove Retirement Center in Whiteville.

Mr. Henson was born in Hardeman County November 26, 1927 to the late Prentiss Obion and Nancy Hall Henson and lived the majority of his life in Whiteville. On January 15, 1961, he was united in marriage to Ivy Lee Henson, who preceded him in death March 19, 1998. He worked as a truck driver, first for Oneal Paving in Memphis. He then went to work as a food truck driver for Western Mental Health Institute, retiring after more than 30 years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Whiteville, where he served as a custodian for 30 years, and loved being with his family.

Survivors include his daughter, Helen Lee Rowland of Henderson; son, Lynn Henson of Whiteville; four grandchildren, Alan Henson of Middleton, Jennifer Henson Burkeen of Cloverport, Jessica Rowland of Henderson and Jerry Rowland, Jr. of Henderson; two great-grandchildren, Colin Henson and Emma Burkeen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Martha Sue Hazelwood, Louise Hazelwood and Katherine Cartwright; and a brother, Orlin Henson.

Donations made in memory of Mr. Henson may be sent to the Whiteville First Baptist Church.
