Funeral services for J. L. Smith 81, of Cullman, Alabama will be at 2:00 pm Wednesday August 12, 2015, in the Cullman Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Antioch Baptist Church cemetery, with Bro. Joel Martin, O.S.B. & Rev. Steve Rodgers officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 11, at Cullman Funeral Home. Interment will be at the Antioch Baptist Church cemetery.
J. L. passed away on Monday. August 10, 2015 at Cullman Regional Medical Center. He was born in Morgan County on August 15, 1933. J. L. was Grounds Manager at Saint Bernard Abbey for 52 years. He always followed the sports teams from Saint Bernard and was loved by the students, faculty and employees.
J. L. enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, raising cattle and helping the school prepare ball fields for baseball and football games. He was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church.
J. L. was preceded in death by his father Neander Smith and his mother Mandie Lou Smith ; Five brothers, Elmes Smith, Talmadge Smith, Albert Smith, Howard Smith and Burl Smith; and four sisters, Noler Chambers, Velma Thompson, Alice Butler, and Lille Mae Hamilton.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years Martha, Son, Johnny (Ragena) Smith, Son, Jason (Susan) Smith and five grandchildren; Lance, Jake, Katie, Brad, Brooke, and one great-grandchild, Austin. Also, sister-in-laws, Lullene Smith, Betty Smith and Edith Smith. He will be missed by many other family members and friends.
