SHEFFIELD – Ahh… the Urban World… Don’t have to deal with all those woodland creatures, as they’re safely cordoned off in the woods. Right?
Not so fast.
That notion was dispelled this morning for a few denizens of Downtown Sheffield when apparently a deer took up residence, if only for a few hours, in Montgomery Place. A nice enough animal, to be sure… It was just…. Well, the place was already rented to somebody else. And Bambi had to go.
Turns out that this deer, who wasn’t looking for trouble, found itself inside a storefront. It was discovered by a worker who was coming in to do some work on the place so it could open for business in a couple of weeks. Seems he was busy getting his tools out of the bag when he sensed a presence looking over his shoulder in the quiet, supposedly empty space. Yeah… It was the deer. Standing right behind him, in the middle of the room. The guy exited without delay and called Lindsey Hughes, the owner of Meraki Academy of Cosmetology, and gave her the good news.
Wasn’t long before Sheffield Police, Animal Control, Zoning, Alabama Game and a few other agencies were over there to check out the deer. Montgomery Avenue was closed down for an hour or so while they figured out just what to do with the situation. Fortunately for the deer, calmer minds prevailed and they decided not to shoot the darn thing. They opened the doors. A couple of fellas came inside from the back and flushed the deer out the front doors. It was a lot less dramatic, than one would at first estimate.
It ran southbound on the sidewalk, down past The Rock Bookstore and Zoey Belle’s. Continued on past 2nd Street and disappeared along the railroad tracks, headed toward the river. It was never seen again.
Nobody got hurt by the deer. Just one lookey-loo, got a little busted up when she stumbled off the curb, watching the deer and not looking where she was going. She was OK just a bump on her nose and a skinned knee.
