Inmate Dies At Lauderdale County Detention Center

LAUDERDALE COUNTY-Correction deputies at the Lauderdale County Detention Center were alerted by other inmates that an inmate was unresponsive in his cell on Tuesday, February 14 around 7:00PM.

Lauderdale County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene and proceeded with life-saving measures but Harley James Coyer, 37 was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lauderdale County Coroner.  Coyers body was transferred to the Alabama Department of Forensics in Huntsville for an autopsy and a toxicology report.

According to authorities it was likely the incident occurred after 5:00PM, the last time deputies had seen Coyer. According to authorities no contraband was found after a cell block search.

Harley Coyer had been in custody at the Lauderdale County Detention Center since May 24 of 2022.  He was arrested and jailed on several charges including attempting to elude, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest.

Sheriff Joe Hamilton said another inmate had become lethargic and showed signs of medical distress and has since been transferred to hospital for treatment and is in stable condition.
