Hubert Ray Mathews, Sr. was born October 24, 1938 in Brundidge, AL the son of the late Hubert and Beatrice Faulk Mathews.
He was united in marriage to Judith Gray Miller on December 19, 1968.
Ray was an over-the-road truck driver for more than 40 years and had an impeccable safety record; through all the years and miles driven he was never involved in a reportable accident. Ray served his country honorably in the United States Army. He was an excellent “shade tree mechanic” and an ardent animal lover.
Ray departed this life on May 23, 2023 in Jackson, Tennessee at the age of 84 years, 6 months, 29 days. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judith (Anavah) Gray Miller Mathews of Selmer, TN; a daughter, Stacy (Dossie) Briggs of Selmer, TN; seven grandchildren: Jason Miller, Cassandra Grimaldi, Ashley Fagan, Hannah Briggs, Joshua Briggs, Yiriah Briggs, and Katie Briggs; sixteen great-grandchildren; a brother, Gene Mathews; three nieces: Sharon Walton and husband Ben, Tammy Schneider and husband Jeff, and Brenda Welch; great-nieces and nephews Kyleigh and Charlie Gossett, Colton Schneider, Logan Jones, and Madison Welch; a great-great nephew, Kashton Thomas, and many extended family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by three sons: Russell Howard Miller, Lance Leonard Miller, and Hubert Ray Mathews, Jr.; a grandson, Ezra Noah Briggs; a brother, Wayne Mathews, and a son-in-law, Stephen (Jeremiah) Briggs.
