The funeral service will be at 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 13, 2024 at Loretto Memorial Chapel with Brother Ronnie Ray officiating. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery, Leighton, AL.
Hubert was married to the love of his life, Mary, for 62 years. He still loved to tell the story of when he first saw her. He saw her at a Lexington basketball game and it was love at first sight. He has been smitten with her ever since.
Hubert was a native of Loretto, TN and a graduate of Loretto High School. He was a member of Cox Boulevard Church of Christ. He and his wife were the owners of the Benjamin Franklin store on Military Street, which later became Videos Plus and a Touch-less Carwash. He drove a school bus for Loretto for 32 years and served in the national guard. He retired and moved to Tuscumbia with his wife to be closer to his daughter and two granddaughters – the joys of his life.
Hubert loved fiercely. His family never had to guess how much they were loved. He put his girls first and loved them well, and loved his great-grandchildren just the same when they were born. He was the best napping buddy and piggyback ride giver there ever was. He loved to be outside tinkering in his garage or mowing the grass. He had a 1948 Ford truck that was his father’s before him that he fixed up and made like new. He loved to drive it in town so everyone could marvel at its beauty.
Hubert was preceded in death by his parents William E. and Beatrice Hughes; his daughter Kelly Uhlman; sister Lois and her husband Les Chandler; brother Glen Hughes; sister-in-law Sadie Nix; brother-in-laws Paulie Smith, Ray Phillips, and Sam Newton.
Survivors are his wife, Mary Hughes; son-in-law Kevin Uhlman; granddaughters Sydnee Kilpatrick (William), Savanna Alexander (Austin); great grandchildren Baker Atchley, Haven and Aubry Alexander, and Presley Kilpatrick; sister Bonnie Smith; sister-in-laws Sarah Phillips, and Elizabeth Newton; brother-in-laws Charles Nix (Teresia), and Raleigh Nix.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Uhlman, William Kilpatrick, Austin Alexander, Jeff Chandler, Charles Nix, and Danny Hughes.
