Howard “Howie” Loyd Lyons, Jr., age 75, of Huntsville, formerly of Haleyville, passed away on Monday, November 11, 2019 at Keller Landing Care in Tuscumbia.
Howie was born on September 18, 1944 to Howard and Betty Jean Lyons in San Diego, California. He earned his Batchelor’s Degree in 1968 from the University of North Alabama where he later went on in 1972 to earn his Master’s. Mr. Lyons devoted his life to education. He proudly served the Haleyville City School System from 1968-1996 in various capacities such as teacher, coach, Special Education Coordinator, Vice Principal, and Principal at Haleyville Elementary School. Howie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Haleyville, where he served as a Deacon, Children’s Minister, and served in the Senior Adult’s Ministry. Howie was also known as a talented guitarist, and shared his gift with numerous students.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at the First Baptist Church of Haleyville from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. where the service will begin at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Nathan Carroll and Rev. Kerry Cleghorn will officiate. Burial will be at Liberty Cemetery in the Helicon Community.
Howie is survived by his wife of 52 years, Annita Cleghorn Lyons; son, Sean Aaron Lyons; brothers; Michael Lyons and wife Fran, John Lyons and wife Cindy, Dennis Lyons, and Tommy Lyons; sisters, Sharon Snider and husband Chuck, and Pat Lyons; brother in law, Allen Cleghorn and wife Sharon; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Howard Loyd Lyons; mother, Betty Jean Lyons; brother in law, Doug Cleghorn; mother in law, Gladys Cleghorn; and father in law, Gordon Cleghorn.
