Howard Bucky Benson, 74, of Grant, passed away Thursday.

Bucky moved to Walker Road with his father and mother when he was a young man, and he was a lifelong resident of the Hebron community. After graduating from Guntersville High School, he was drafted into the Army. He served as a K9 MP in Germany during the Vietnam War.

After returning home from Germany, he met and married his wife, Reda. They settled on their farm on Merrill Mountain where they raised commercial chickens, hogs, and cattle. He also worked off the farm as a licensed professional land surveyor.

Since retiring from Smith Engineering in 2016, Bucky devoted his time to the farm-to-table business, cherished visits with family and friends, and in his most adored role of “Pawpaw” for his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by father, Howard Benson; mother, Nellie Benson; brother, Alvin Benson; and sister, Dorothy VanNess.

Surviving are wife, Reda Kay Benson; son, Jason Howard (Sandy) Benson; grandchildren, Jaxon Heath Benson, Caraleigh Dawn Benson, Naomi Piper Benson, Brock Allen Benson; and niece, Tina VanNess Sok.

Visitation will be Saturday 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at New Hope Funeral Home. Services will be held at New Hope Funeral Home Chapel, Sunday at 2:00 pm with Chris Bolton, Rev. Gary Paseur officiating.

Pallbearers will be Jaxon Benson, Rodney Bodine, Christopher Botlon, Junior Dixon, Daniel Kean, JW Kennedy, Dwayne Skinner, and Rickey Walker. Honorary pallbearer will be Henry King.

Interment will be in Morris Cemetery.
