FLORENCE-July is going to be HOT at FLPL..there will be book making, Jazz, King Kong, Poetry and Happy Birthday Harry.  Mark your calendars and do not miss one of these educational and fun events.

“Our House” Bookmaking Program
Saturday, July 14, 1:00-3:00 pm
Want to tell the story of your home in a cool scrap book? Join us for the “Our House” bookmaking program at the library. You’ll bring photos and other information related to your family’s home, and we’ll provide the supplies. At the end of the program, you’ll have a free scrapbook celebrating your home. The whole family is invited to come and help in making your family’s book. This program accompanies the “House and Home” exhibition at Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts. The Screening Room: Long Live the King

The Screening Room will be showing the award winning feature documentary about the enduring appeal of the character King Kong, and how he has inspired so many of the great filmmakers and artists since 1933. Long Live the King features interviews with industry professionals and lifelong Kong fans including director Joe Dante (The Howling, Gremlins), actor Brian Howe (Westworld), director/effects artist Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead), Dana Gould (Stan Against Evil, The Simpsons), actor Doug Jones (Hellboy), actress Alexis Iancono, director/effects artist Tom Woodruff Jr., archivist Bob Burns, effects artist Chris Walas, actor Douglas Tait, artists Mike Hill and William Stout, plus many more.

Florence Summer Showcase
at the Florence Mall
Thursday, July 19, 3:00-6:00 pm
FLPL will have a booth at this community event showcasing Florence’s best businesses and organizations. We’ll have hands-on activities for all ages, and we’ll be showing people how to use our online services, such as ebooks and audiobooks. Plus, Mrs. Jessica will do a storytime at 4:40 pm. You’ll also have the opportunity to vote for FLPL as your Florence Favorite!

Poetry Jam
Thursday, July 19, 7:00 pm
FLPL is hosting an open mic poetry jam to close out this year’s Summer Reading Program! Come and share your own work, or just sit and listen to local poets. Refreshments will be provided by Alabama Bliss. Be advised that this event may include adult content.

Introduction to Sewing
Monday, July 23, 10 am-12:30 pm
In this beginning sewing class, we’ll take you through the basics of using a sewing machine. Topics covered include sewing machine components, threading a sewing machine, and basic sewing machine stitches.

There is a $5 deposit per person to register. The deposit will be returned to the registrant on the day of the event. Please email the Collaboratory manager at james@flpl.org or call (256) 764-6564, ext. 137 to register. Space is limited, so sign up today!

No materials are required and no knowledge of sewing is assumed. This event takes place in the Collaboratory, located on the second floor of the library.

Handy Event: Jazz It Up With Trash

Kids (3 and up) and families are invited for this annual Handy event! Make musical instruments out of recycled materials and enjoy live music by Microwave Dave. This is an N Harmoney with Nature Litter-Free Event. Sponsored by the library, Florence Recycling Center, Keep The Shoals Beautiful, and Shoals Earth Month, Inc.

Handy Event: Check Out the Blues

Enjoy jazz in the stacks at this annual Handy event, featuring the Jazz Allstars. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library.
