Horace Eugene Campbell, 97, of Hazel Green, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 16, surrounded by his family. He is now singing in the heavenly choir, along with his wife of 64 years, Juanita Wallace Campbell, his parents, Walt and Mary Campbell, and his sister, Gertrude, who passed away at age 12. He will be greatly missed by his children, Barbara (Jim) Wilson and Carolyn (Bill) Kent; his grandchildren, Amy (Roy) Adams, Ryan (Sara) Kent, and Adam (Dana) Kent; and his great-grandchildren, Shelby Adams, Carson Adams, Madelyn Kent, and Tyler Kent.
While we knew him as Daddy and Papaw, you may have known him by H.E. or Gene. You probably also knew him by the bounty of his garden or his love for music. Whether he was leading songs at church, directing the youth choir, singing in a quartet, or playing guitar, mandolin, banjo, or fiddle, he was always happiest when he was making music.
He graduated from Hazel Green High School in 1942 and started his first job at Lewter’s Hardware. He worked for John Blue Company for the majority of his career. But his proudest accomplishments were his juicy watermelons and the copyright of a song he wrote entitled “Hallelujah Chorus.”
Funeral service will be held at Hazel Green Funeral Home at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, with Brother Donald Russell officiating. The family respectfully asks that you wear a mask to the service. Burial will follow at Concord Cemetery in New Market. Well done, good and faithful servant!
