Herbert “Herb” Johnson

  Herbert “Herb” Johnson passed away at the age of 95 on Saturday, December 19. Herb was born on March 15, 1925 in Cullman County, Alabama to Louis Emmitt and Bama Johnson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, and son, Stan Johnson (Betty).

Herb is survived by his remaining children, Jim Johnson (Rosemary Seig), Steve Johnson, Carol Horstman (Robert), and Marti Johnson, grandchildren Stacey Channell (Chris), Will Johnson, Jamie Johnson, Ross Horstman (Emily), Kelley Johnson, and Seth Horstman (Esther), great grandchild Max Channell, brothers Sidney Johnson (Jean), Bill Johnson, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and long-time friends.

Herb proudly served in the Navy during WW2 and took part in the Normandy Invasion (D-Day) at Omaha Beach. An avid runner and active member of the Birmingham Track Club, Herb continued competing in 5K runs well into his eighties. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor, strong work ethic, and willingness to go above and beyond for those in need.

Due to COVID-19 concerns, the immediate family will gather privately to celebrate Herb’s life. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Cullman Senior Center, where Herb enjoyed many happy hours with staff and friends.
