Helicopter located …Bloodhounds At the Scene To Aid In Search For The Pilot

crashCOLBERT COUNTY-Late Tuesday night the recovery team located  the Hughes 500 Helicopter that crashed into the Tennessee River near the Natchez Trace Bridge. Today, Wednesday, April 8 authorities are bringing in several sophisticated helicopters to aid in search operations.  The helicopters are expected to arrive before noon.  Search bloodhounds are at the scene now awaiting transport to the area where the transponder was found.

Sonar has been brought in to help search crews on the water locate the position of the helicopter wreckage.  The search has been a struggle due to inclement weather and strong river currents.

The search team has been tracking the helicopter’s transponder since Monday natchez-trace-bridge-over-tenn-river1afternoon.  On Tuesday searchers pinpointed the location of the transponder on the river shoreline on the Lauderdale side of the river.  According to searchers the transponder became dislodged from the helicopter after the crash into the river. The pilot has not been found.

The helicopter belongs to Haverfield Avation, a company doing inspection of utility lines.  according to a member of the search team the copter was en route to Scottsboro flying out of Corinth, Mississippi.
