Harry A. Hughes – Obituary

The Rev. Harry A. Hughes, of Florence, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, after a lengthy illness.

The funeral service will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, Sheffield, with the Rev. Richard Oberheide officiating. A reception will follow at the church.

The Rev. Hughes was born in Montgomery, Ala. on Oct. 14, 1944. He graduated from Montgomery Catholic High School, St. Mary’s College, St. Mary, Kentucky, and Mount Saint Mary’s College, Emmitsburg, Md., with a Masters in Theology and Religion.

He was ordained at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Mobile, Ala., and later served 25 plus years in the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi as a rector for several parishes throughout the diocese.

He was an avid fisherman, enthusiastic University of Alabama football fan and loved plants and gardening. He served as President of the Lions Club and was a longtime member of Rotary International. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

The Rev. Hughes is survived by his wife, Nancy Jones Hughes; children, Christopher J. Hughes (Emily) and Christina K. Audet (Michael); stepchildren, Lara Sue Morris (Richard), Michael Harry Sedor Jr., Bruce Gerard Sedor, Anthony Michael Sedor, Amanda K. Roberson (Darren) and Nicholas B. Kirby (Annie); brothers, Walter J. Hughes (Nancy) and William A. Hughes (Faye); 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John C. Hughes and Kathleen Jackson Hughes; and a brother, John C. Hughes Jr.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Grace Episcopal Youth Fund.

Elkins Funeral Home, Florence, is assisting the family.
