Of the news stories that absolutely shock and offend me are stories where people are killed because they don’t wear their seatbelt.
My mother had an 86 year old friend who recently died in a car wreck and she didn’t have her seatbelt on.
Sometimes we can excuse teenagers for not thinking or for thinking that they can’t get hurt. No matter how hard we try to excuse people and their behavior there is just no excuse for being stupid enough to ride in a car without wearing a seatbelt.
Some of you know that I like sports cars. Some of you know I love sports cars. Things were different when I started my love affair with Porches, Ferraris and other exotic, beautiful machines. That was before we had cell phones. You could, with some degree of accuracy, predict what another driver was going to do. Now, people are finding out if they are supposed to buy chili with beans or chili without beans or maybe even breaking up with their significant other. You can’t predict with they’re going to do because they don’t know what they are going to do.
I have seen my friends children ejected through sunroofs because they didn’t wear a seatbelt. It’s not like you can’t look around as you drive and see other drivers driving as if they had been in a bar because they’re texting.
Every one of us has a lot to give thanks for, let’s let one of those things that we are thankful for be that those people who love us don’t have their hearts torn out because we forgot to put on our seatbelt.
