Gwin Theron Wells Gwin Theron Wells, age 95, of Sumiton, AL, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2024, at Walker Baptist Medical Center. Born to Samuel Jack Wells and Molly Bell Powell Wells, Gwin’s life was marked by a deep commitment to his community and an enduring legacy of service.

Gwin is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 69 years, Sonja Ann Wells, whom he married on September 10, 1955. He is also lovingly remembered by his nieces, Brinda Nichols and Linda Sims.

Gwin made significant contributions to Sumiton, where he served as mayor for 20 years (1968-1988). During his tenure, he was instrumental in building the town’s first city hall and bringing Bevill State Community College to Sumiton, enhancing educational opportunities for the community. His commitment to education extended to his 34 years as a teacher and principal. He held both a Master’s in Education (EdS) and an AA degree from Samford University. Gwin was also an active Mason, reflecting his dedication to service.

He was preceded in death by his siblings Talmage Wells, Hessie Anderson, Jewell Dawson, and Willard Wells.

A celebration of Gwin’s life will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at 2:00 PM at the Bell Sumiton Chapel. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no public visitation. The service will be officiated by Ted Blalock, and Gwin will be laid to rest at Wells Celestial Gardens Cemetery in Sumiton.

Gwin Theron Wells will be remembered for his visionary leadership, his dedication to education, and the love he so generously shared with his community. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and cherished him.
