“A Man Who Never Met a Stranger”

Gus Carney, born May 17, 1940, in Needham, Alabama, passed away September 17, 2012. He was a graduate from the University of North Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. Gus served over 10 years in the U.S. Army as a Captain and was the recipient of two Bronze Star Medals. While stationed in Germany, he met and married the love of his life, Inge. They eventually settled in El Paso, Texas, where they raised their family. He initially worked at Safety-Kleen for 10 years, and then began his career in trucking. His true passion in life was the sport of racing. His love for racing blessed him with many friendships, both far and near. Gus was always willing to help out his fellow racers and was never short of funny stories. He is preceded in death by his father, John Russell Carney. He is survived by his beloved mother, Marcel; sister, Jocel Burcham; loving wife, Inge; sons, John (Shea), Patrick (Leilani); grandchildren, John II (Lindsay), Tara Turner (Justin), their mother, Elizabeth, Alexis, Madison and Jett; and his great-grandchildren, Zoey, Maverick, Grace, Johnna and Baby Turner. Services will be held at noon Friday, Sept. 21st at Martin Funeral Home Central, 3839 Montana Ave., El Paso, Texas. Inurnment will follow at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery with military honors at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Jaxson Godwin at First National Bank of Fabens Account No. 901002121.
