FLORENCE – The groundbreaking ceremony for Rotary STAR Play, a Sensory, Tactile, and Adaptive Recreation park, is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Friday, October 1, at McFarland Park under O’Neal Bridge.

Members of the Florence Rotary Club, the Greater Shoals/Sheffield Rotary Club, and the

Rotaract Club of University of North Alabama will join Florence Mayor Andy Betterton, Florence City officials, members of the Associated General Contractors of Alabama, and other dignitaries to mark the occasion. The public is welcome.

The park will feature playground equipment designed to meet ADA standards, such as wide ramps and ladders to reach slides; sensory and interactive boards for hands-on activities; communication panels identifying choices or needs with the use of pictures; a wheelchair/tricycle track; and an inclusive merry-go-round. The playground will be fenced to provide a safe zone for play.
