A graveside service is planned at Herring Cemetery, Hartselle, Alabama on Monday, July 17, 2023, at 10:00am. Gregory Thurman Allen, 64, of Springville, Alabama went to spend eternity in Heaven on July 13th, 2023. Greg’s strong will and determination carried him 27 months through his battle with blood cancer. Greg, better known to his family as Pawpaw, was born on November 26, 1958, in Huntsville, AL. He grew up in Argo, AL and graduated from Hewitt Trussville High School in 1977. After high school, Greg started working in the natural stone industry becoming a masterful stone mason and Superintendent for Intrepid Enterprises until retirement. Some of his beautiful workmanship on commercial jobs can be seen all over the nation including the Oklahoma City National Memorial, Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park and Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Greg’s interests included hunting, boating, fishing, and watching Alabama football. The last several years, some of his favorite activities were taking the grandkids on golf cart rides, to go fishing at the lake, and watching them enjoy the pool. Anyone that knew Greg knew he loved to talk and never met a stranger. Greg is preceded in death by his parents, George and Margaret Allen, and brother, James Allen. He is survived by his loving wife Phyllis of 44 years; son, Derrik Peart (Renee); daughters, Tara Pearson (Ross), Ashley Light (David), and Lindsay Weldon (Josh) and 12 grandchildren, Braden, Konnor, Clara Ann, Addison, Kollin, Xander, Wyatt, Walker, Allen, Lakelynn, Ally, and David Jr; brother, George Allen, Jr. (Rhonda); sister, Carol Schantz (Steve); and sister-in-law, Jenny Allen and many cousins, nieces and nephews. There are not enough words of appreciation and gratitude for the Hematology and Oncology doctors and their entire staffs at UAB, The Kirkland Clinic, CRU, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for all that was done for Greg and our family. We will never forget your professional help, kindness, concern, and friendships made through this very difficult journey.
