Good Samaritan Arrested Driving Stolen Car

ATHENS-Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson released a statement concerning the arrest of a suspect on Thursday, June 22:

“Wednesday afternoon, June 22 shortly before 5:00 Officer Mac McWhorter arrived on the scene of an accident on South Madison Street. He noticed a gray Chevrolet Suburban with a North Carolina tag in a drive near the accident. He asks the driver of the Suburban if he was involved in the accident and the driver said he wasn’t that he just stopped to check on the people in the other car.

McWhorter checked the tag on the Suburban with dispatch to see if it was stolen. A short time later the vehicle came back stolen out of Vestavia Hills, Alabama.

The Suburban had already left the area by the time McWhorter found out it was stolen. A few minutes later McWhorter located the vehicle in the Crutcher Center parking lot. The driver of the Suburban was identified as Jerry Dewayne Davis.

Davis was arrested for receiving stolen property 1 degree. 

Davis later confessed to stealing the Suburban and another vehicle from Mobile that he left in Vestavia Hills.

Davis was transported to the police department where he was booked and later transferred to the county jail.”
