Glenda Ruth Brooks Jenkins, age 85, of Decatur, Alabama, passed away on May 14, 2024 at Peachtree Creek Memory Care in Atlanta, Georgia.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday May 18th at 10:00 am at Roselawn Cemetery with Shelton Funeral Home directing. Following the service the family will receive family and friends at the residence of Dashiell McKay, 1044 Jackson St. SE, Decatur.
Mrs. Jenkins, the only daughter of J.D. Brooks and Lorabelle Wilder Brooks, was born on February 25, 1939. Known as “Honey” to her family, Glenda was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Glenda was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, John Roland Jenkins, and her son John “Jay” Jenkins, Jr. Honey will be missed by her children Jan Jenkins Huber (Merritt), Joel David Jenkins (Elizabeth) and Johanna Jenkins Czarnecki (Jeff) and grandchildren Merritt Huber (Sarah), Blake Huber, Caroline Jenkins, Reid Jenkins, Jay Czarnecki and Annabelle Czarnecki.
Glenda was born in Birmingham, Alabama. She married John Roland Jenkins on September 8, 1957. Glenda loved her role as wife and mother. She was happily involved in her four children’s lives as they grew up in Decatur and especially enjoyed their frequent family excursions and adventures on their boat on the Tennessee River.
Glenda was a talented decorator and homemaker and was well known to be impeccably dressed. Her collection of hats and shoes is legendary, and she wore them well. A lifelong musician, Glenda majored in music and sang in the Central Methodist Church in Decatur. Glenda played the clarinet, piano and organ and served for several years as the organist at Priceville Methodist Church. Glenda and John attended First Bible Church in Decatur for many years where she enjoyed teaching Bible study and Sunday School. Glenda enjoyed wonderful friendships in Decatur with her church family, her neighbors and her friends in Le Juene Meres.
In her later years, Glenda moved with her husband to Atlanta, where their children lived, in order to spend more time with their grandchildren. Their move was timely, as grandson Jay and granddaughter Annabelle were born soon after. Glenda loved to babysit for them and had a loving relationship with them, as well as all of her beloved grandchildren.
The greatest and most beautiful gift that Glenda, along with John, gave her children and grandchildren was sharing with them her Christian values and faith in God, which has continued to be an important and foundational part of all of their lives. Her children are beyond grateful to her for that blessing.
Glenda has a beautiful reception awaiting her in Heaven and a longed-for reunion with her late husband, John; her sorely missed son, Jay; and her Savior, Jesus Christ. She will be the loveliest and best dressed lady there.
