It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a beloved husband, father, and esteemed electrophysicist and lead engineer, Glen Beatty, at the age of 61.
Glen’s dedication to his family was paralleled only by his commitment to his profession. For over three decades, he played a pivotal role in the world of electrophysics, providing groundbreaking contributions to Boeing as their lead electrophysics engineer for several groundbreaking space exploration missions, including Spacelab, SPACEHAB, the International Space Station, and the Space Launch System.
Outside the professional sphere, Glen was a man of many passions. As a dedicated Boy Scout troop leader, he instilled values of leadership and perseverance in many young men. He also left an indelible mark coaching soccer, softball, and tee ball, teaching not just the games but life lessons through sportsmanship and teamwork.
A true lover of the outdoors, Glen found solace in hiking, camping, and just gazing out at his garden, observing the creatures that visited and the serene beauty of nature. His dedication to community shone when he volunteered and built Kids’ Space at John Hunt Park. Completed in under six days, this modern and bright playground quickly became a favorite among Huntsville families.
He cherished memories of the past, often reminiscing about the old days and delighting in watching reruns of classic shows, especially Seinfeld. On clear nights, he would be found stargazing with his telescope, lost in the vast wonders of the cosmos. Glen was truly a gentle giant – towering in both stature and spirit. His ever-present smile, even during challenges, was a testament to his positive outlook on life.
At home, his love story with his devoted wife, Mary Jane, spanned 41 years. Together, they raised three wonderful children: Nikki, Will, and Rebecca. His pride in his children’s accomplishments was evident in every story he shared. He is survived by his parents, Roberta and Bill Beatty, his wife, Mary Jane Beatty; children Nikki, Will and his fiancé, Mandy, and Rebecca; brother, Mike Beatty and wife Barbara; niece, Sarah; nephew, Drew; and granddaughter, Ryleigh.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support they’ve received during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers for those wishing to send them, in remembrance of Glen’s passion for exploring the universe please consider making a donation in Glen’s name to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center student scholarship (a combined total donation of $1,700 supports one student; Glen’s Memorial Scholarship will be available in the coming days at https://rocketcenterfoundation.org/memorial-gifts) or to the ALS association. Flowers and condolences can be sent to Laughlin Service Funeral Home, located at 2320 Bob Wallace Ave SW, Huntsville, AL 35805.
Visitation will be from 10:00-12:00 on Saturday, October 7th at Laughlin Service Funeral Home, with a memorial service celebrating Glen’s life immediately following. All are welcome to join and commemorate a life lived with purpose, love, and boundless enthusiasm.
