Gladys Cornelison Shelton
January 24,1936-April 14, 2024 (age 88)
Letcher Community
Gladys was born near Guess’s Creek in Paint Rock Valley on January 24,1936, and was the second (living) daughter of Elmer and Pansy (Parton) Cornelison. As a young girl Gladys grew up in the Letcher Community. She told many, many stories of the adventures she and her sisters had while living there and attending an elementary school situated in front of what is now Gold Cemetery. The family later moved to nearby Skyline and Gladys and her sisters attended Skyline School. At the time it was a 1st through 9th grade school so Gladys completed her high school education and graduated from Woodville High School in 1954 along with a schoolmate who shortly became her husband, Douglas Shelton. After a short stint in Washington DC, Doug and Gladys moved back to their original home in Letcher, AL. Their family grew with the addition of two daughters, Yvonne and Dianne. Both Doug and Gladys were employed by Burlington Industries in Scottsboro AL and worked there throughout the early years of their marriage. After raising their girls, Doug and Gladys traveled throughout the country with Doug working as a millwright with Fluor Daniels Construction. Gladys enjoyed traveling from one worksite to the next particularly in the Western states. She explored the countryside along the way but her heart always remained with her family in the Letcher/Skyline area so when they retired it was, quite naturally, back home to their mountain.
Gladys enjoyed and mastered many hobbies throughout her lifetime. Quilting, crocheting, knitting, gardening (both vegetable gardening and flower gardening), canning the produce from her gardens, reading, sewing, basket weaving, cooking and baking just to name a few. (She was quite famous in her circle of acquaintances for her German Chocolate Cake, her Italian Cream Cake and her Butter Pound Cake.) If interested in something new to her, she was quite determined to master it. She was full of common sense and would gladly share it if requested (and sometimes shared it unrequested.) She was a life long member of The Skyline Church of God and served the Lord faithfully throughout her lifetime. She was very active in the Ladies Ministries, the Church Choir and any other endeavor that she could lend a hand in until her illness prevented her attendance and her participation in the ministries. Her happiest, most satisfying role in life was that of mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a friendly, kind, outgoing person who rarely met a stranger. If they met as strangers, they usually didn’t remain strangers for long.
Gladys is survived by her daughters, Yvonne (Bill) Golden, Dianne (Eddie) Sharp, her Grandchildren, Laura (Kenny) Olinger, Jeremy (Christy) Sharp, Dustin (Star) Wells, Beth (Tim) Rousseau, Matthew (Leslie) Golden, her Great Grandchildren, Hannah (Steven) Gill ,Vannah (Mitchell) Bell, Nathan (Madison) Olinger, Peyton Lyons, Daniel Olinger, Bodie Wells, Landon Rousseau, Logan Rousseau, Joshua Golden, Anna Golden, Owen Golden, Sisters, Evelyn Manning, Juanita (Alton) Sharp and Linda (Pete) Paradise, Sister in law, Marcia (Claude) Summerlin, several nieces and nephews and a host of deeply loved friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Douglas Shelton, Granddaughter, Amber Golden, Great Granddaughter, Sarah Golden, Parents, Elmer and Pansy Cornelison, Infant sister, Ruby Cornelison, unnamed infant brother, and Brother-in-law, Dewey Manning.
