Gervacia Ocasio Velez

Mrs. Gervacia Ocasio Velez, age 87, of Wedowee passed away on March 3, 2024. Her family will have a memorial service on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at 4:00 P.M. at their home in Wedowee, 31 4th St SW.

Mrs. Velez was born and raised in Puerto Rico until 2006 when she moved to Alabama. While in Puerto Rico, she was a seamstress by trade, but also was active in the humane society, and was a volunteer with the municipal courts and mayor of the city of Caguas. She was eventually given the key to the city, and became an adopted daughter of Caguas, Puerto Rico for her civic contributions. Mrs. Velez even wrote a poem to the city. Her family always knew her as a talented writer and had a love of reading. Her family reflects on her amazing ability to cook, spending time outside and appreciating nature. Her hallmark was her smile, and no matter how sick she may have felt, she always had a smile on her face. Mrs. Velez was also a faithful woman who loved serving the Lord. She was a devoted wife for over 60 years and a caring mother to her children and grandchildren.

Mrs. Velez is survived by her daughters; Elba L. Roman Ocasio of Oxford and Elena V. Roman Ocasio of Cropwell; her son, Ivan A. Roman Ocasio of Wedowee; her grandchildren: Sara Roman, Anna Roman, Kannon Reeves, Carolina Torres, Edgar Torres, Angel Roman, Pedro Torres; six great grandchildren; a sister, Sonia Velez of Wedowee; and a brother, Sebastion Ocasio Velez of Puerto Rico.

Mrs. Velez is preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Miguel Angel Roman.
