Gertrue Doss Hayes, age 96, of Lawrenceburg, TN passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 28, 2024. She was born to Jesse and Lillian Doss on October 8, 1927. She was a native of Lawrence County, TN and a member of First Baptist Church of Lawrenceburg.
She wed the love of her life James, at the age of 20. She spent most days at Robert Hayes & Sons hardware store, working alongside her husband. She was a devoted mother to her two boys, James Charles and Gary. She was affectionately known to her granddaughters and great-granddaughter as “Nanny”. She never sat still; there were always meals to prepare, scripture to read, or a garden to tend to.
She was an exceptional puzzler and if a piece didn’t quite fit, she found a way to make it work. Not a night went by that she missed her favorite show, Wheel of Fortune. Gertrue believed in early to bed and early to rise. She was a devout Baptist. She believed in moderation and led a healthy lifestyle, but she did have a sweet tooth!
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Lillian Beard Doss; her husband, James Monroe Hayes; two sons, James Charles Hayes and Gary Wayne Hayes; and four siblings, Howard Doss, Troy Doss, Johnnie Doss, and Lola McConnell.
She is survived by her brother, Andy Herbert Doss (Janis); daughter-in-law, Barbara Hayes; two granddaughters, Melissa Compton (Jake) and Laura Hayes; and one great-granddaughter, Stella James Compton.
Arrangements are being handled by Neal Funeral Home, 231 N. Military Avenue, Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM Thursday, May 02, 2024, at Neal Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at Neal Funeral Home at 12:00 PM Thursday, May 02, 2024, with Jeff Vanlandingham officiating. Interment will follow at Lawrence County Memorial Gardens in Lawrenceburg, TN. The family suggests memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Lawrenceburg.
