Gerlean Rushing Britt passed away peacefully on October 8 2024, in Jackson, TN, at the age of 84.
Born on April 24, 1940, in Decatur County, TN Gerlean graduated as the class valedictorian from Scotts Hill High School in 1958. Her commitment to excellence was evident from an early age, laying the foundation for a fulfilling life ahead.
Following her graduation, Gerlean embarked on a dedicated career at the local garment factory, where she worked until her retirement. Even after stepping away from her formal employment, her industrious spirit lived on as she spent time cleaning houses alongside her sister, Linda. This bond and their shared work exemplified the love and support that characterized her family life.
Gerlean met her beloved husband, Bobby Eugene Britt, and they exchanged vows on September 19, 1959. Together, they welcomed their son, Timothy, on July 17, 1960, solidifying a family unit that was defined by love, laughter, and the sweet joys of life.
Known affectionately as “the cake lady,” Gerlean’s passion for baking brought delight to many. She crafted hundreds of cakes for church events, birthdays, and celebrations throughout her life, with her chocolate cake often heralded as the best around. Baking was not just a hobby; it was a manifestation of her love for her family and friends. Gerlean continued to create her delicious confections until just a few months before her passing.
In addition to her baking talents, Gerlean was an active member of Lighthouse Church in Jackson, contributing to the spiritual life of her community with unwavering faith as long as she was able. Her presence touched the lives of many, leaving behind intricate memories that will be cherished by all who knew her.
Her husband, Bobby, preceded her in death on July 25, 1995, after almost 36 years of marriage. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Odell Franklin Rushing (Francis) and Bobby Gene Rushing (Skimp) and brother-in-law, Alton Ivey. She is survived by her son, Timothy Britt of Jackson, TN; two sisters, Ludean Ivey of Scotts Hill, TN and Linda Cagle (Danny) of Jackson, TN; special niece, Lisa Medlin (Dale); and special grandniece, Likay Medlin. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members that she loved dearly.
Gerlean has left a legacy of family, friends, and acquaintances that will forever cherish her memory. She has now gained a perfect new family, and her angel presence will be with us all forever.
