Gerald Wayne Smith, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on July 23, 2024, at his home.

Gerald was born in Russellville, Alabama, February 9, 1952, to parents Hubert and Nannie Smith. After graduating from Russellville High School, Gerald began his military service by joining the National Guard in 1971. He proudly served his country for 21 years, retiring in 1992 as a E6 Staff Sargent. A lifelong Russellville resident, he worked at G & G Steel while he and his wife Phyllis raised their daughter Denese.

Gerald became a grandfather in 2003, and his grandchildren Shelby, Reece, and Cami Beth were the joy of his life. He enjoyed cheering them on in their sporting events, bragging about their academic accomplishments, and spending as much time with them as he could, especially riding in “Grandad’s Jeep.” An active member of Russellville First Methodist Church, Gerald loved the fellowship of monthly men’s breakfast group and volunteered his time preparing breakfast for many years. Gerald and Phyllis traveled as much as they were able, with a trip to the Canadian Rockies being one of his favorite trips.

Gerald is survived by his wife, daughter, and grandchildren, as well as siblings Patsy Gist (Danny), Faye Tompkins, and Ricky Smith. Pall bearers are Gene Ellison, Don Garrard, Mike Hargett, Tony Myrick, Derrell Potter, and Rocky Stone, and with Eddie Bolton serving as an honorary pall bearer. Pinkard Funeral Home in Russellville, AL, is entrusted with the arrangements. Visitation will be held at Russellville First Methodist Church Friday, July 26, 11 AM – 1 PM, followed by funeral services at 1 PM at the church. Toby Chastain will preside. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Russellville First Methodist Church.
