George Washington Vestal, Vice Mayor of Mount Pleasant, Tennessee passed away Sunday, June 19, 2016 at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. He was 73. George was elected to the commission in 2014 after serving on the Mount Pleasant Planning Commission and as chairman of the Mount Pleasant Industrial Planning Board.
George was born in Gordonsburg, Tennessee to George Sr. and Donna Vestal. His music education began at Clarke Training School in Mount Pleasant. George played the trombone in the Army’s 101 Airborne Division Band. At Tennessee State University, he completed his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education and a Master’s Degree in Music.
Next, he was Director of Pre-Release at Spencer Youth Center for the State of Tennessee. Attending Nova University, George received a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. In California, he earned his Real Estate License and became an entrepreneur. George owned a fish restaurant, carpet store and other small businesses in California and Tennessee.
George’s hobby was fishing. He referred to Mount Pleasant as the “Dimple of the Universe.”
He is survived by his wife Judith, daughter Connie, sisters Marva, Diane, Wanda, and Hattie, brothers Mark, Clifford, and Sam. George also has a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family in celebration of George’s life will be on Saturday, June 25, 2016 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant. A tribute to George will begin at 3:00 p.m. A Repass will follow immediately at the Community Center located at 501 Gray Lane in Mount Pleasant, Tennessee.
