George Shelton, age 85, died Sunday, December 18, 2022, at his residence in Sugar Tree, TN.
Born on Saturday, January 16, 1937, in Madison County, TN, he was the son of the late James Benjamin Shelton and Georgia Mae Glover Shelton.
A graduate of LSU Banking School of the South, George started his banking career with First National Bank in 1955, retiring from First American Corporation after 40 years of banking.
Active in the community, George served on the Board of Directors of the YMCA and the Old Hickory Mall Association, Treasurer of the Reelfoot Council of the Girl Scouts, and Past President of the Jackson Lions Club. He served 8 years in the National Guard in the 30th Ordinance Division as Staff Sergeant. His love for crappie fishing is what drew him to retire at Sugar Tree, TN.
George is survived by his wife Madelyn; daughters, Lisa Shelton Sanders (Jeff) of Milan, TN, Beth Gant and Jodie Caperton, both of Lexington, TN; grandchildren, Dru Sanders (Candace), Shelton Sanders (Liz), Pace Ward, Jessie Caperton Milner (Richard), and Davis Caperton (Lauren); and great-grandchildren, Madelyn Mae Sanders, Adaleigh Avery Sanders, and Dallas Milner. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ben Shelton.
SERVICE: The funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 20, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Arrington Funeral Directors with Davis Caperton officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 11:00 a.m. until the service time at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Oakfield Cemetery.
Those serving as pallbearers will be Steve Overton, Allen Heim, John Lawson Keeton, Dru Sanders, Shelton Sanders and Richard Milner. Honorary pallbearers will be Dan Farrell, Charlie Vlink, Kinzie Barker, Jerry Griggs, and Jeff Sanders.
The family has requested in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be directed to the Oakfield Cemetery Association, c/o James Fullerton, 3627 Old Medina Rd, Oakfield, TN 38362.
