George Herbert “Soney” Jones, Jr., 93, of Decatur, passed away Friday, July 5, 2013, at his residence.
Soney was born September 29, 1919, in Union Springs, AL. He grew up in Tuscaloosa and graduated from Tuscaloosa High School. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1941, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. After graduation, he served as a Major in the United States Army duringĀ World War II. He was stationed in Alaska and oversaw the construction of a segment of the Alaskan Highway. He then served in the South Pacific until the end of the war.
He was married to Bessie Peach Jones for 64 years before her death in 2012.
He was the founder of G.H. Jones, Inc. – Metal Buildings. His company designed and built many commercial buildings in Decatur and surrounding areas. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church since his marriage there in 1948. He served as a member of the Vestry and as Junior and Senior Warden at St. John’s. He was a member of Decatur Country Club, the Decatur Kiwanis Club, and Club 20.
He is survived by one son, George Herbert Jones, III (Ruth) of Birmingham; daughters, Lucia Alston Logan (Ben) of LaCanada, CA, and Martha Jones Lang (Ken) of Birmingham; and brother Wolsey V. Jones (Barbara) of Jackson, MS. He is also survived by five grandchildren: George Jones, IV, Addie Jones, Benji Logan, Deedee Logan, and David Lang.
Memorial Service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9, 2013. Visitation will follow immediately in the Parrish Hall after service. Funeral arrangements will be coordinated by Roselawn Funeral Home.
