George Francis Redman, 77, of Pensacola, Fl, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2024 at Traditions of Smyrna Assisted Living Center in Nashville, TN.
George Francis Redman was born on November 29, 1945, to Francis Paul Redman and Ann Estelle Ball in Washington, DC. George graduated from Oxon Hill High School in 1965 where he was a member of the Oxon Hill football team. Upon graduation, George worked various jobs before entering the US Army. He served in Korea for two years from 1965 -1967. It was in Korea that George met his future wife, Chong Cha Choe. While overseas George looked up and saw Chong Cha and quickly learned to speak a little Korean and asked her out on a date. While still stationed in Korea, George and Chong married.
After returning to the United States, George and Chong settled into their home in Indian Head, Maryland. They began a family having three young sons within 4 years. George worked for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority in DC. His passengers enjoyed talking with George as he made his rounds on his bus route sprinkling his advice along the way. Later, George transferred to a position as a station attendant in the subway system. He enjoyed helping tourists navigate the subway system, and was commended more than once for saving the life of a depressed person. His desire to be of service to others extended beyond his work in the Army and at Metro. It was not unusual to see George helping a neighbor down on their luck or to give a person a place to stay for a couple of months as they get back on their feet.
George’s sons have good memories helping their father fix up old clunker cars, selling the finished product. In spring and summer, they would go on frequent fishing trips on the Chesapeake Bay, coming home to prepare the fish for dinner or to freeze for a later date. Fishing trips always ended with a family trip to McDonald’s, a treat for a family that lived miles and miles away from their nearest McDonald’s. In the fall, they would work together cutting down trees into firewood at his mother’s house in Mechanicsville, MD. With his love of the outdoors being evident, it was not a surprise when George moved to Pensacola when he retired. In Pensacola, he could continue to pursue his love of fishing and sit on his front porch with a view of the Gulf at the end of a long day.
George will be greatly missed by his wife of 54 years, Chong, as well as his family and friends. He is survived by his three sons, Benjamin Paul Redman (Melissa) of New Egypt, NJ, Andrew Frank Redman (Ann) of New Market, MD, and Michael Francis Redman of Antioch, TN; six grandchildren, Lara Elizabeth Redman, Alan Francis Redman, Michaela Rose Redman, Nicholas Huston Redman, Benjamin Everett Redman, and Olivia Ann Redman; and one sibling Paul Andrew “Andy” Redman. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson James Andrew “Jamie” Redman.
A graveside service will be held for George Redman on March 27 at 2.pm at Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 7931 McCrory Ln Nashville, TN 37221. A private visitation will be held for family before.
