George F. Neely, Jr., age 79, of Jackson, TN, entered his heavenly home on Monday, August 26, 2024, at Maplewood Healthcare of Jackson, with his loving wife, Janet by his side.
He was born on May 11, 1945, in Jackson, TN, the son of the late George F. Neely, Sr., and Bernice Powell Neely.
George dedicated his life to education, committing many years to shaping the minds of young individuals. George’s career in education was marked by a breadth of experience and service. He began his professional journey as an assistant principal at the former North Side Junior High School, where he also coached both girls’ basketball and football. His passion for educational leadership culminated in his role as Principal at Nova Elementary, a position he proudly held for sixteen years. His dedication to his students and staff was further underscored by his pursuit of knowledge, earning a master’s degree, which reflected his belief in the power of education.
Though his career was a significant part of his life, George also found joy and peace in farming. He embraced it as a second career, often finding solace as he rode his tractor through the fields, indulging in the simple pleasures that life had to offer. Known for his quick wit and outgoing personality, George had an incredible ability to make those around him smile, creating an enduring legacy of warmth and camaraderie among friends and colleagues.
George leaves behind his wife, Janet Smith Neely, and two loving daughters, Ella Neely and Beth Neely and a son, Butch Yates and wife Katrena. He is also survived by his brother, Grady Eugene Neely and wife Elizabeth, along with sister-in-law Kim Eckhardt and sister-in-law Syd Harris and husband Raymond. He was preceded in death by his beloved in-laws, George Rogers Smith and Ella Jeanette Smith, and brother-in-law Bill Eckhardt.
SERVICES: A funeral service to celebrate George’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 29, 2024, at Ararat Baptist Church, with Rev. Bryan Morris officiating. Burial will follow in Ararat Cemetery.
The family will be receiving friends and family on Thursday, August 29, 2024, beginning at 10:00 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at the church.
George F. Neely, Jr. will be remembered not just for his contributions to education, but for the love and kindness he shared with those whose lives he touched. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
