George Donald James, 79, of Cherokee passed away on Friday, April 29, 2016. Visitation will be Sunday, May 1st from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Larry Kilpatrick officiating. Burial will be at Cherokee Memorial Park.
George was a native of Colbert County and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. He was a retired heavy equipment mechanic for TVA. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 320, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, and the Church of Christ.
George was preceded in death by his parents, George Washington and Ella Mayce Thorne James.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Dorthie Byrd James; sons, George Rodney James (Karen) and Michael Alan James (Brigitte); daughter, Kathryn Lynn James Aday (Tommy); five grandchildren, William James, Mary Catherine James, Colin James, Connor James, and Erica Aday Williams (Kevin); and one great-grandson, Ridge Williams.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
