George David Murphree Sr.

George David Murphree Sr. was born October 19, 1928, in Birmingham, Alabama and left this world surrounded by his family on October 31, 2023. He was adopted into the loving home of Oscar and Evie Murphree, where he was showered with love and began growing roots of faith.

George graduated from Hanceville High School in 1946 and soon after embarked on a 43-year journey with South Central Bell, where he had a successful career and developed lifelong friendships with his coworkers.

For over 70 years, George was a dedicated member of Central Baptist Church, where he lived out his faith in countless ways. He was a Sunday School teacher, Adult Mission Trip coordinator, choir member, Youth Camp Cook, Wednesday night supper cashier, Encourager, Chairman of the Brotherhood, van driver, and so much more, all while sharing the love of the Lord with those he met.

George enjoyed playing sports throughout his life and found great joy in watching his children and grandchildren play. He loved The University of Alabama and looked forward to going to games with his best friends and family. He learned to love gardening from his mother and often enjoyed a healthy tomato growing competition with his neighbor and friend.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Evie Murphree. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Katrene Murphree, and five children, George Murphree Jr, Janet McCool, Lyndon Churchill (Lisa), Michael Murphree (Rita), and Ann Faulk (Jasper). He leaves behind 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren who will forever carry his memory and his love for the Lord in their hearts.

George’s legacy is one of love, faith, and service. He touched the lives of many, and his memory will live on through the countless people he influenced and by his unwavering love for the Lord.

A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, November 3, 2023 at 11:30AM at Central Baptist Church in Decatur. Visitation will be 10:30AM to 11:30AM prior to the service at the Church. Shelton Funeral Home assisted the family.
