George “Bobo” Washington Clay, affectionately known as BOBO, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, was born April 2, 1945, to the late George Young and Elizabeth Clay in Lawrence County, Alabama. He departed this life on Sunday, April 9, 2023 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

George Washington Clay graduated from Central High School in Courtland, Alabama in May 1964. In 1968, George was drafted into the United States Army and served in the Vietnam war. He was very diligent in whatever he set his mind to and this is exemplified through his dedicated and loyal service in the United States Army. Staff Sergeant Clay served 6 years in the United States Army. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart Medal for many heroic acts in which he risked his own life on the behalf of another’s. This was who George was – he always cared about others’ well-being. George also served in the National Guard for 20 years. George was additional employed at Chattanooga Glass Company. To know him was to love him.

George had a humorous side to him; he had an infectious laugh that would sweep you off your feet. He had the ability to make you laugh to no end. It was nothing for him to travel and show up at your house for a visit.  You would look around and he was gone back to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he had made it his home after being honorable discharge from the Army.

George loved his family with all his heart. His love for family was accredited to his mother, the late Ms. Elizabeth (HONEY) Clay, who taught her children to stick together no matter what. His mother not only instilled this love for family in George, but in all his brothers and sisters. George had many friends and loved ones in North Alabama and Tennessee, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
