Mr. Gene A. Young, age 69, husband of Faye Young, and a resident of Columbia, passed away Sunday evening, April 30, 2017 at Maury Regional Medical Center.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 3PM at Heritage Funeral Home with Jeremy Butt officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Garden with military honors provided by the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4-8PM and again on Wednesday from 2-3PM at the funeral home. Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Born on July 5, 1947 in Lawrence County, Gene was the son of the late Norman Young and the late Clara “Cookie” Dye Young. He served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Gene married Faye on April 4, 1970. He was a member of Northview Church of Christ. Gene was a fire inspector for the city of Columbia and worked nearly 15 years as a fireman at the Columbia Fire Department. He also worked several years as an electrician at Lee Company. He was a loving and caring person who would do anything for anybody. He loved his family, especially his children and grandchildren. When his children were younger, Gene loved being involved with all of their activities. He enjoyed doing arts and crafts and was an avid Tennessee football fan.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons: Chris (Erin) Young of Spring Hill, Tim (Amanda) Young of Columbia; brothers: Jim Young of Leoma, Bud (Sue) Young of Lawrenceburg; sisters: Mamie (Dwayne) Johnson of Pulaski, Betty McFall of Ethridge; grandchildren: Kayla, Madi, Sydney, and Addy Young; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews; and his beloved Yorkie, Riley.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Knapp.
Pallbearers will be: Kevin James, David James, Scott Ponder, Ronnie Ponder, Will Brown, Roger Peterson, and John Driver. Honorary pallbearers will include: Billy Ray King, members of Northview Church of Christ, and the Columbia Fire Department.
