Gaye Taramangos Dixon was born February 14, 1943, in Memphis, Tennessee. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Friday, April 3, 2015, at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia. Her funeral will be at 12 noon on Saturday, April 4, 2015 in the funeral home chapel, followed by burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Sheffield.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Cora Taramangos, and her brother, George Louis Taramangos.
She is survived by her son, Dirk Dixon and her precious granddaughter, Charleigh Marie Dixon of Gulf Shores, Alabama; her sisters Sophia Zumbro of Augusta, Georgia, and Elaine Carter of Jasper, Alabama, and many other nieces and nephews.
Gaye was a graduate of Sheffield High School, and earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Physical Education from UNA. She taught in the Muscle Shoals City Schools as a physical education teacher for 31 years. She was also a cheerleader sponsor and coached volleyball and basketball. After her retirement, she was a substitute teacher for 15 years. She spent several of these years in the Special Needs classroom. Gaye loved her students and taught three generations of families.
Gaye was an active member of the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary. She also enjoyed gardening, decorating, hosting Bunco, and spending time with her family and friends.
Active pallbearers will be Trevor Zumbro, George Zumbro, Jon Zumbro, George Taramangos, Jeff Gist, and Glenn Murphree.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made in Gaye’s name to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 728, Florence, Alabama 35631, or to the American Cancer Society, 2745 Bob Wallace Avenue SW, Huntsville, Alabama 35805.
