Gary Don Swearengin departed from this life on April 19, 2024. He was born in Springfield, Missouri on April 13, 1948 and his life was a testament to love, service, and adventure.
Gary cherished his role as a husband to Janice Swearengin, father to Denice Kirby, and father-in-law to Scott Kirby. His grandchildren, Nichole and her husband Tyler Charlton, Christopher, and Blake Kirby brought him immeasurable joy and pride.
In addition to his immediate family, Gary is survived by his nephew Jeff Smith and wife Karen Smith, as well as his niece Julie McNabb and her husband Todd.
Raised in Springfield, Missouri, he was a 1966 graduate of Central High School and held a Bachelor Degree from Columbia University. A proud military veteran, Gary served his country with honor and distinction. Beginning his service in the Air Force in 1968, he later transitioned to the Army, where he served from 1975 to 1991, retiring as Chief Warrant Officer III. His time in Vietnam as a Radar Specialist was a source of great pride to him, reflecting his dedication to duty and his fellow soldiers.
Gary’s love for the open road and the freedom of the motorcycle was well-known. As an enthusiastic motorcyclist, he was a valued member of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association (CVMA), finding kinship and adventure on every side. The interment will be held at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo. A motorcycle escort will be held by the CVMA and the Patriot Guard.
Gary’s infectious laughter, unwavering loyalty, and zest for life will be clearly missed by all who knew him. His legacy of service, love, and adventure will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
A celebration of Gary’s life will be held at American Legion/CVMA at a later date, where friends will come together to share memories, stories, and laughter, celebrating the remarkable life of a truly extraordinary man.
