COLBERT COUNTY-One of the largest Labor Day celebrations in the South, a festival honoring American Indians and the largest fair in northwest Alabama are among the many events happening around Colbert County in September.
The Shoals Central Labor Council’s annual Labor Day celebration at Spring Park in Tuscumbia, begins at begins at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 7 with a parade along Main Street in Tuscumbia. Political speeches, music and other activities will follow, beginning at 11 a.m., in Tuscumbia’s Spring Park. The celebration is the oldest of its kind in Alabama. For more details call 256-383-2758.
The annual Key Underwood Memorial Coon Dog Cemetery Labor Day Celebration begins at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 7, at the world-famous cemetery, 9495 Coon Dog Cemetery Road, near Cherokee. Susann Hamlin, executive director of Colbert County Tourism and Convention Bureau, said September is traditionally a busy month for festival and events in the Shoals, but this year it is going to be even more exciting with the addition of several concerts.
“It’s great for tourism and great for our residents to have so much going on in September and throughout the year in Colbert County,” Hamlin said.
Cypress Moon Studios Concert Series will feature Adam Ezra Group at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9 and Web Wilder at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29 at the legendary recording studio at 1000 Alabama Ave., Sheffield. Seating is limited. For tickets, or more information, call 256-764-1434.
The 15th annual Oka Kapassa, Return to Coldwater, Festival, is Friday, Sept. 11 and Saturday, Sept. 12 at Spring Park in Tuscumbia. Admission is free to the festival that celebrates the rich traditions and cultures of American Indians. Motorcycle riders from throughout the nation will converge on Colbert and Lauderdale counties Saturday, Sept. 19 during the Trail of Tears Commemorative Motorcycle Ride, that ends in Waterloo. The activities in Waterloo, which include concerts, a pow wow and vendors, begin Thursday, Sept. 17. The motorcycle ride rolls into the Shoals around 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19. Anglers from colleges and universities throughout the Southeast and Midwest will be in Sheffield Saturday, Sept. 19 for a Fishlife Collegiate Tour bass fishing tournament on Pickwick Lake.
