THE SHOALS-Is English not your native language? Are you afraid to speak English because of the mistakes you might make? Are you tired of having family translate for you? Do you feel disadvantaged not knowing English? Are you seeking a job and need to better your English? Are you ready to speak for yourself?
The Northwest Alabama Reading Aides (NARA) partnered with the University of North Alabama’s (UNA) Honors Program is now offering a free class to adults (18+) that want to improve on speaking English. The purpose of this free class is to reach non-native English speakers in the Shoals area and help them to become more comfortable speaking the English language.
Classes will be offered at the NARA building in Downtown Florence at 501 N Seminary St. The first class will be Thursday, September 17 at 6:00 PM. UNA Honors Program Students will be partnering with NARA’s board and staff to teach the classes. Please come join us and bring a friend.

Northwest Alabama Reading Aides is a local non-profit United Way agency that functions as part of ProLiteracy and serves Franklin, Lauderdale, and Colbert counties. The organization provides one-on-one tutoring for adults in the community that are illiterate or functionally illiterate. We have trained tutors who provide non-readers with personalized teaching. The agency will be providing classes in Conversational English to non-native speakers beginning September 17th at the Reading Aides office – 501 N Seminary Street, Florence. NARA also works with stroke survivors whose reading abilities have been compromised due to a stroke and host stroke support group meetings twice each month. All tutors work on a voluntary basis and all services are free to students.
