Frances W. Nix, 84, of Hazel Green, Alabama, passed away on March 5, 2025. She was born to the late Fletcher and Lydia Williamson but lovingly raised by her late aunt Cynthia Williamson.
She is survived by her children, Lori (Mike) Johnson and Ray (Beth) Nix; her grandchildren, Jordan (Erin) Johnson and Tyler (Natalie) Johnson; her brother, Horace (Barbara) Williamson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. In addition to her parents as well as her aunt, Frances was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Gerald “Buddy” Nix, and her sister, Doris (Gene) Underwood.
Frances had a deep passion for serving others and learning new skills throughout her life. She trained with the Red Cross and worked in the school clinics at Hazel Green School, providing care to students in need. An incredibly talented seamstress, she mastered pattern-making, French sewing, smocking, macramé, and even china doll making. Her creativity extended to the kitchen, where she took numerous cake decorating and candy-making classes, and to the arts, where she enjoyed ceramic work.
Her adventurous spirit led her to take self-defense and karate classes, and she even took flying lessons, successfully completing a solo flight in a Cessna. She humorously recounted her experience of instrument-only flying, admitting that it “made me nervous.” Frances also worked for Auburn University, where she dedicated her time to teaching nutrition and essential cooking skills to rural communities and individuals in government programs, making a lasting impact on many lives.
But within this community everyone was familiar with Nix’s Garage of which she helped run for many many years with her late husband.
Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she was a devoted member of Grace Family Worship Center. Her commitment to her church and faith was unwavering, and she remained active in worship and service until her health began to decline.
The family will receive friends at Hazel Green Funeral Home on Saturday, March 8, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on the same day at the funeral home with Eddie Lones officiating. Interment will follow at Stateline Cemetery.
