ATHENS– The City of Athens…information for the Fourth of July holiday. Remember…Athens Fire and Rescue and Athens Police remind you the use of fireworks is prohibited in the city limits of Athens except for permitted shows.
City of Athens Offices Closed
Offices for the City of Athens will be closed on Tuesday, July 4, in observance of the holiday.
No Changes in City of Athens Sanitation Schedule
For City of Athens customers, there are no changes in the sanitation schedule for the July 4 holiday.
The annual Athens Fireworks Show is Tuesday, July 4, at dark (around 9 p.m.) at Athens High School stadium on U.S. 31. The City of Athens, Athens-Limestone Tourism Association and Limestone County Commission sponsor the free show.
There is no seating in the stadium. Motorists can park in designated parking spots at Athens High School, Athens Plaza, and elsewhere along U.S. 31. Athens Police will restrict access to U.S. 31 starting around 7:30 p.m. During and after the show police will prohibit median access. East side traffic will exit to the east and west side traffic will exit to the west.
“Motorists need to watch for increased pedestrian traffic in the area and expect travel delays as officers deal with traffic congestion,” Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said.
Johnson estimates several thousand attend the fireworks show each year.
The Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives will host the “Faith and Courage Exhibit” on Monday, July 3, from 9 a.m. to noon. The exhibit honors the service and heroism of U. S. military chaplains from World War I and World War II. The exhibit aims to honor those often overlooked by the important role they play in the lives of service members. This is a free event.
