ATHENS– Former Alabama Governor Albert P. Brewer has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities from Athens State University. Brewer, the state’s governor from 1968 to 1971, currently serves on the faculty of the Cumberland School of Law as Professor Emeritus of Law and Government.
Brewer received the award on Monday, September 12 at a luncheon in Birmingham with Athens State President Robert Glenn, Athens State Trustees Senator Arthur Orr and Sandra Sims-deGraffenried, and Athens State Vice President for Advancement Keith Ferguson.

“Governor Brewer is a true southern gentleman and has a tremendous record of service to the state,” remarks Glenn. “It is a privilege for us to honor all that he has accomplished in the field of education for Alabama.”
Brewer’s administration was marked with many significant accomplishments in ethics, economic development, and education. His achievements in education included the largest increase in appropriations for public schools in Alabama history; the creation of the Alabama Commission on Higher Education (ACHE); the creation of the Education Study Commission; a constitutional amendment to provide for the election of members of the State Board of Education and the appointment by the Board of the State Superintendent of Education; and the equalization of funding from the state to local school systems.
Athens State’s honorary degrees are conferred to recognize outstanding individuals for their significant contributions to society and they serve as a centuries-old tradition of the academic community. Honorary doctorate degrees are not earned through academic achievements, rather through generous and altruistic actions or lifetime accomplishments that benefit a community, nation, or humanity in general.
